Wearing My Truth: Choosing What I Love Over What Fits

“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.” — Orson Welles

For a long time, I made choices based on what would suit me — whether it was clothing, art, or even decisions in life. The idea was always to find something that aligned with my body type, personality, or skills. But over time, I started questioning: Was I making choices based on what I truly wanted, or was I simply curating an image that fit an external expectation?

It started with fashion. I would buy clothes that “flattered” me, that looked good according to conventional wisdom. But were they what I wanted to wear? Sometimes, I found myself drawn to styles that didn’t necessarily fit the definition of what looked best on me but spoke to something deeper — my mood, my energy, my creative spirit. It was a revelation to shift my approach from “Does this suit me?” to “Do I love this? Does this make me happy?”

This journey extended beyond fashion. In art, I used to create what I thought would be impressive or well-received. But then, I began experimenting with pieces that reflected my inner world, my raw thoughts, my unfiltered imagination. The shift from crafting something aesthetically pleasing to something deeply personal transformed my creative process. I found that authenticity, not just external appeal, is what makes art powerful.

Even in life choices, this realization held true. I used to think about what career path, social circles, or even hobbies would suit me best. But when I started focusing on what I truly enjoyed, what sparked joy within me rather than what checked the right boxes, everything felt more fulfilling.

This journey has been about unlearning expectations and reconnecting with desire. It’s about trusting that what I genuinely love — whether or not it fits some predetermined mold — is what will ultimately suit me best. Because in the end, the most beautiful things aren’t just the ones that fit; they’re the ones that feel right.
